It's here! It's here! Slightly warmer weather. Slightly longer and sunnier days. It doesn't take much to get gardening juices flowing this time of year, and the least little bit of warmth in the air sends us scurrying outside to take a deep breath and asses the winter damage. Since I'm absolutely positive you read my post about planning the layout of your garden with handy software, I'm sure you know exactly what you're planting and exactly where it's going. So let's get it started!
Regardless of the freaky balmy temperatures, I decided this year to pre-sprout my peas before planting to ensure germination and hope for an earlier harvest. Last year's peas took quite a while to produce, so I'm opting for the 2nd grade science experiment method of germination. I popped my peas in between layers of a damp paper towels and mostly sealed them into a plastic ziplock bag. I'll keep them moist for the next week or so ensuring that the peas will soften, swell, and start growing a bit before they hit the soil. After that, they will clamor up the grapevine trellis producing lovely yellow and purple (easily harvestable!) pods.
